Movie Review Movie Review Gladiator is a movie about ancient Rome that released at May of this year. There are four major characters in this movie, which are Russell Crowe, Joaquin Phoenix, Richard Harris and Djimon Hounsou. This movie is directed by Ridley Scott. Since it contains violent materials, it is rated R and is restricted to minor audience. The total running time of this movie is 150 minutes. The great Roman general Maximus ( Russell Crowe ) has once again led the legions to victory on the battlefield. The war won, Maximus dreams of home, wanting only to return to his wife and son. However, the dying emperor Marcus Aurelius ( Richard Harris ) has one more duty for the general to assume the mantle of his power. Jealous of Maximusi favor with the emperor, the heir to the throne, Commodus ( Joaquin Phoenix ), orders his execution and that of his family. Barely escaping death, Maximus is forced into slavery and trained as a gladiator in the arena where his fame grows. Now he has came to Rome, intents on avenging the murder of his wife and son by killing the new emperor Commodus. Maximus has learned that the one power stronger than that of the emperor is the will of the people. He also knows that he can only attain his revenge by becoming the greatest hero in the empire. Maximus ( Russell Crowe ) plays an important role in the movie. He shows his bravery and intelligence from the beginning to the end. After the new emperor finds out Maximus real identity, he orders an execution to Maximus. However, Maximus' fellows help him to escape from death by sacrificing themselves. It shows that there is a good relationship between Maximus and other gladiators. Even though they haven't known each other for a long time, they respect Maximus and acknowledge his importance to Rome. Hence, they choose to save Maximus's life even though they would be killed. At the beginning of the movie, Maximus has once again wins the victory of the battle. It shows his great ability and bravery on a battlefield. After he becomes a gladiator, he establishes a good relationship with other gladiators. He teaches them the right way to fight and saves their lives over and over. He sees the difference between soldiers and gladiators. During the fights, he realizes a gladiator doesn't deserve anything but to entertain people and to die. Even though he misses his wife and son, he notices he can't die until he avenges. From these scenes, I can see the cruelty and horror of people. People are very selfish; they don't care about others but themselves. Meanwhile, people rather sacrifice others to satisfy their desires. Based on the historical background and scenarios, this movie is authentic to me. It teaches me a new lesson, which is to aware people that are around me. From now on, I wouldn't judge people on their appearances; I would judge people on their personalities instead. There are certain techniques in the movie that I especially admire. The jumbo-size epic, which called for 2,500 specially designed weapons, 500 gladiator tunics, 30,000 mud bricks, and the burning of an entire English forest. Besides these techniques, it takes place in four different countries before the film is finished. Furthermore, the fights that appear in this movie are very authentic with the special affects. Since I am a fan of ancient history, I think this is a great opportunity for me to visualize the Roman Empire. I can see the structure of Roman government, and the attraction of power within the loyalty. It also analyzes people's personalities in different ways, which include kindness, intelligence, bravery, selfish and horror, etc. This movie is debuted at number one after it is released. It earns a thumbs-up estimated $32.7 million, filling seats at all arenas with an $11, 130 average on 2, 938 screens. Based on these numbers, it is unique compare to other films. Theater

No one could believe that the rough faced girl could see the Invisible One even though she was ugly and had rough face. On the other hand, the belief in the Vietnamese version of the Cinderella story has a big difference with the Native Americans version. In the Vietnamese version, Tam and Cam, Buddha was a form for their belief. In this story, Tam was the Cinderella, and Cam was the stepsister. When Tam had a rough time, Buddha always came to help her. Vietnamese people had known Buddhism since the second century, and it gave a big influence to their culture, especially to their traditional fairy tale stories. In Buddhism, they teach their isciples about karma and reincarnation which is implied in Tam and Cams story. In this story, it showed that Cam died because of her mean behavior; she killed Tam and took her husband. Cam thought by doing all those things, she would live peacefully. However, it did not turn out like she hoped for which is a good example of karma according to Buddhisms doctrine. Reincarnation was also used in this story several times. When Tam was killed by her stepmother and her stepsister, she reincarnated into a vang anh bird, a green thi tree, and into real her form once again. According to the aspect of magic, the magic happened in the Algonquin Cinderella story after the sister of the Invisible One knew that Cinderella was the only girl that could see his brother. She took that rough faced Cinderella home and bathed her. Now, the rough faced girl turned into a very beautiful woman. As she did so, all the scars disappeared from her body. Her hair grew again, as it was combed, long, like a blackbirds wing. Her eyes were now like stars: in all the world there was no other such beauty. (par 28). However, in Tam and Cams version, the magic is slightly different from the Algonquin Cinderella story. In Tam and Cams version, the magic happened by Buddhas help. When Tam was upset that she did not have anything to wear to the festival, Buddha came to her and ask her to open the four Jars that she had buried before. When she opened them, she found a beautiful silk dress, a pair of embroidered shoes, a miniature horse, and a richly ornamented saddle and bridle. The magic also happened when Buddha asked the basketful of unhusked rice. Moreover, the ending of the Algonquin Cinderella story is a happy ending. The Cinderella who used to be a poor little girl and got treated harshly by her sisters turned into a very beautiful woman. She was also able o see the Invisible One because of her pure heart, and she had the opportunity to become his wife. Meanwhile, the Cinderellas sisters were rejected by Invisible Ones sister because they were lying about their sight of seeing her brother. On the other hand, the ending for the Tam and Cams story is different with the Algonquin Cinderella story. The antagonist characters in this Vietnamese version died because of their bad behavior. Cam was killed with the boiling water. Tam also cooked her body into mam with a rich sauce and sent it to her stepmother, saying that was a present from her daughter. par 65). The stepmother died because she was very shocked after she found out that meal was her daughters meat. when the Jar of mam was nearly empty, she saw her daughters skull and fell down dead. (par 67) Thus, the Algonquin Cinderella and Tam and Cam stories share the same message that good always defeat the evil, but they are different in their aspects of belief, magic, and their ending. These two stories have their own unique concepts base on their culture and society from each country, but in some ways, they have the same meaning and lessons as the original story of the Cinderella.

But everyone appreciates his contribution to Science as he was considered the father of the atomic bomb and the creator of the weapon ice-nine, which later leads to the Earths destruction and the end of all lives. Ice-nine is a small substance that Dr. Hoenikker secretly created but eventually falls into the hands of the dominant government in the novel. It is solid at room temperature and has a melting point of 45.8à ¢Ã¢â‚¬Å¾Ã†â€™. When this substance comes into contact with liquid water that has a temperature below the melting point of ice-nine like the seas or oceans, it can cause the solidification of the entire body of water and will result to a chain of ecological destruction and end all life on Earth. Dr. Hoenikker is the antagonist of the story due to his perception and views of life. When he was asked about the relation of science and sin, he asks, What is sin? From these instances, he truly shows that he does not care about people or morality and his inability to understand can create destruction and violence around him. Vonnegut wanted us to see Dr. Felix Hoenikker as a representation of the so called saints in the field of Science, which are the scientists who pursue abstract truth and knowledge without considering human consequences. Most of them nowadays is being blinded by power and fame in which they just dont care about others. Some of them works for the government in which they are being manipulated and controlled to build weapons for war. The goal for some scientists is to make their inventions successful and the result of destroying nature and killing innocent people is not their concern. I truly agree on his idea about scientists today because in my opinion, scientists consider themselves as masters of nature inspired by scientific advancements and I see them as cold men of Science who are cut off from human concerns. They made Science to commit sin and be manipulated as an evil tool that created the worst human sufferings and might lead to humanitys extinction in the future. The novel is a whole criticism to peoples ignorance. All of the ideas that a society holds about its progress and development including how it is achieved through research and discoveries by the use of Science. However, our worlds greatest or should I say the most destructive scientific discovery is the atomic bomb, which has the capacity of ending thousands of lives. So, a society pursuing a better world through Science is ironic because the further mankind dives into scientific discoveries without ethical understanding, the more destructive the society becomes. Religions have supplied these higher form of truths in the past but because of Science, through its advancement and its credibility, it became a kind of false religion. Countries like U.S., Russia, United Kingdom, France, China, India, Pakistan and North Korea have admitted that they possess nuclear weapons. The recent atomic bombing event was the North Korean nuclear test that occur five times this year but the current one happened last September 9, 2016 and they did not immediately announce about the test. It is like our humanity is continuously discovering new ideas on how to destroy itself. Science will only be beneficial if it will be used as a common good for mankind and we know that it became our foundation in developing societies and improving human life, however all of us is also worried on the power that Science possesses to destroy life on Earth. It is true that Science can create wonders by all of its discoveries and inventions but the way it is used as a weapon of mass destruction that controls our existence is not its fault. Human stupidity and its unethical values is the main cause why we have these kind of weapons at the first place. Their different ideologies went too far that they had misused Science in creating destructive weapons instead of bettering our world. In the wrong hands, Science will have the capacity to ruin lives of innocent people and if we let it to become our master then it might be the end of the world for us and we will be wipe out from the face of the Earth. We should not let Science overpower us and control our way of life. Science sho uld be use as a support in expanding our knowledge for a great cause, promoting security and safety to everyone, establishing better societies, improving human life and strengthening our moral responsibility. The easiest way to do this is through its only democratically elected body: the European Parliament. In order for both internal members and external observers of the Union to perceive it as a legitimate democratic entity, the Union ought to seek to maximize the democratic utility of the European Parliament. As the only directly elected instit ution within the European Union, the European Parliament carries a special and unique responsibility in establishing and maintaining the democratic reputation of the entire European Union. In this paper, by first providing a description of the Parliament and the deficiencies of its current role within the Union, I will suggest a variety of steps to be taken by both the European Parliament and the European Union to foster awareness and support of the institution amongst the European Public. The concept of an European identity, the role and use of the media, and the quality of election campaigns are three interrelated ideas that, if dually cultivated, could have a highly beneficial impact on the awareness and support of the European Parliament amongst the public. According to Rutledge (2010) p. 109, reasonableness may have up four factors to consider: Justification, scope, place, and manner of execution. He also makes a valid point to state that even if an officer were to have the first three factors, justification, scope, and place the fourth is the most important because it could invalidate the search and seizur e if its not done properly.A justifiable search could have many factors that would allow an officer to conduct a proper search or make a lawful detention and stops. One of them is a search warrant, which carries a limited authority to detain persons present and also search the property detailed on the warrant. Another is a criminal profile; an example would be of a drug dealer that would fit the physical description given to the officer. Either way, suicide is a desperate act. And in this short story yellow by Peter Carty, they main character, Jon, ends up making the decision to commit suicide. Jon, the main character, is in the late thirties, he is a bit overweight, but beside that he describes himself as being in good physical condition. He has a job at a magazine, which is why he is in Egypt to scuba-dive because when his stay is over he has to write about it. In general he doesnt seem pleasant about his life; he has a girlfriend, but their relationship is substandard the silences between them had multiplied, then lengthened into an empty continuum. And his job situation doesnt seem any better, because his trip to Egypt and scuba-diving is definitely something he hates Jon hated anything active or sporty. He connects scuba-diving with death, which is why he is so scared about it. He is horrified that he will drown, and therefore he is unable to stay calm under water. I think that what he is most afraid of is not the fact that he could drown, no; it is the fact that he would find himself devoured of emptiness. You could lose yourself in that, swallowed up and gone forever, a speck vanishing in the blue without sound or ripple. Buddhist talked of opening yourself up to emptiness well, here it was next to him [..]. He is afraid that he would become nothing, a no one. That he would disappear into emptiness. The magazine would let him go soon. His writing would dwindle, disappear down to a dot and vanish, his girlfriend would have left long before and hed cast off from the last of his friends and relatives. He pushes himself to go through the diving because if he does he wont become nobody or as they in the text call yellow. I think the word yellow is in the story used in the meaning coward or fool because a coward doesnt often have the guts to face his own problems. And that is here the subject suicide comes in. Suicide is often associated with being a coward, because of the fact that a coward cant handle his own problems. But Jon on the other hand believes the opposite; he thinks that committing suicide will show people that he isnt a coward or yellow as they call it. He thinks that if he commits suicide while he is scuba-diving it would perhaps look as an accident and everyone will be affected by his death; Bertie, his diving instructor, Brian, the other diving student, his boss, who forced him to go, and last but not least his girlfriend will all see that they should have listened to him and therefore it will make him significant. It seems like in yellow nature can invoke thoughts of dying. This is the same in the poem suicide note by Langston Hughes. In this the river is personified, being the one who asks the suicide to drink its water which means to die. Nature reminds us that were just changing pieces of a puzzle and that we dont have control and power over anything and especially death. If we compare Jon to everyday life, he finds himself in an extreme situation. I would personally feel uncomfortable if I was going to scuba-dive, because I dont feel like I am in control I cant breathe like if I was above water. This feeling of no control is what the text What is Reckless Op about? is about. Some people love being in a situation where they dont have any control at all. They love practicing extreme sports and pushing themselves to their limits. It is their way to feel that they are alive, because they often find themselves very close to death. However, Jon doesnt fell a thrill by being close to death. He is very insecure about it. He doesnt like to be on the brink of life it makes him feel yellow. Jons life isnt very satisfying and therefore he chooses the easy way out which is committing suicide. But the ironic thing about it is that Jons sees his act as a not yellow thing to do.
